Senior Capstone

Created by a team of six in the 2018-2019 "Deep Games Senior Capstone", Lantern is a puzzle platformer about losing something you hold dear and learning to pick yourself back up.

My Role

I worked as 1 of 2 Game Designers on our team.

My role included:

  • Game Design

  • Narrative Design

  • Level Design

Game Concept

The original idea, pitched by our programmer Clay, was a puzzle platform game that follows a hero who is tasked with climbing a mountain but who loses the power they've been given to achieve the task. The tale serves as a metaphor for the journey of a person who has lost something significant to them.

In the final game, the story follows a nomad with a magic lantern, who is tasked with powering crystals on top of great mountains. But the lantern is lost. The Nomad loses their way and falls deep into the mountains cavern. Then they must climb out of the deep cavern, up the mountain, and power the crystal on their own.

My Role: Game Designer

Lantern was pitched as a puzzle platformer where the gameplay and story would be closely interlinked.

As a Game Designer, I collaborated with the team on the following aspects: game mechanics and game narrative, to accomplish this objective.

After generating concepts and executing designs, I collaborated with the team to establish a work schedule that would benefit everyone and allow us to collaborate effectively.

My responsibilities included:

  • Prototyping game mechanics

  • Creating prefabs in collaboration with programmers and artists.

  • Designing levels based on the mechanics and needs of the story.

  • Running playtests and implementing the appropriate feedback.
